The Atheta rove beetle (Atheta coriaria or Dalotia coriaria) is an effective biological control for fungus gnats, shore fly, and soil stages of thrips. They enjoy a variety of growing medium including soil, rockwool, and coco coir. They cannot survive freezing or flooding. Adult Atheta have a good flight range and can get easily get from plant to plant to search for prey. We recommend introducing Atheta in tandem with the Hypoasis miles (Stratiolaelaps scimitus) . The H. miles have a shorter life cycle than the beetle and these two beneficial bugs make an excellent team.
Dosage - The information given here is a general guideline. Release rates can be affected by the stage/size of the cannabis plant, climate conditions, and level of infestation.
For light infestations use 2 beetles per ft². For heavy infestations use 6 beetles per ft²
The adult rove beetles are packed per 1000 bugs in a practical 1L sprinkler tube with a mixed peat carrier. Open the dosage lid by twisting and the beetles can be distributed by making plies on the growing media. For a package of 1000 make 20-40 piles. You do not need to put a pile in each pot or plant because these predators can fly.
Atheta coriaria can also be obtained in 5L buckets containing 3000 beetles per bucket. A 5L bucket can be distributed into 60-120 piles.
We recommend releasing the Atheta coriaria immediately upon receipt.
If immediate release is not possible the Atheta can be stored for up to 3 days if they are kept at 10-15°c and a relative humidity of >85%.
