About - Shore flies are sometimes confused with fungus gnats. Shore flies are better stronger fliers and can be distinguished by the light coloured spots on their dark wings. Shore flies do not damage plants but do effect marketability.
Monitoring - Yellow sticky cards can be placed at soil or canopy height to monitor adults. Look for small black dots on the leaves of your plants as a sign of shore fly infestation.
Treatment - Atheta coriaria (Dalotia coriaria) rove beetles are fast and aggressive predators that feed on the shore fly eggs and larvae. Nematode Steinernema carpocapsae is a parasitic roundworm that finds an insect or larvae host, crawls inside though natural openings and infects the host with bacteria - killing it from the inside out.
